Tricia Stewart is the originator and driving force behind the alternative WI Calendar that shot to fame in 1999 and continues to be a global phenomenon, raising almost £5 million in the fight against blood cancer. The story has since spawned a critically acclaimed blockbuster Hollywood movie where Dame Helen Mirren played the role of Tricia and also a hit West End musical written by Gary Barlow which will be visiting Sunderland Empire in the coming weeks, Tricia's role being played by Denise Welch this time!
Tricia is a born and bred Mackem and loves to visit the city whenever she can, she recently delivered an inspirational talk at a City Centre venue where she told of her love for all things Sunderland.
It was during this visit, Tricia came into the hospice and met staff and patients, immediately asking how she could get involved. With Tricia's public profile, fundraising drive and inspirational stories, we know she will make a fantastic ambassador and we are proud that she chose to support us here at the hospice.
Tricia said "The hospice movement is a wonderful organisation providing care for sick and terminally ill patients. I am very proud to become an ambassador for St Benedict's Hospice in Sunderland . I was born in Sunderland , qualified and worked as a radiographer there and although I live in Yorkshire now my heart remains in my city by the sea still, especially at the Cat & Dog steps! St Benedict's is a remarkable place not only because of the cleverly designed building but the genuine feel of calm, caring and professionalism of everyone I was fortunate to have met there, when Anthony said the opportunity was available, I couldn't say yes fast enough!"
